Article 43: Teaching Kids About Money

The Monday Money Brief

October 12, 2026

Most of us learned about money through experience.

Usually expensive experience.

We learned about credit cards after carrying a balance. We learned about budgeting after overspending. We learned about investing after realizing how much time we had already lost.

Our kids don’t have to learn the same way.

Teaching kids about money doesn’t require complicated spreadsheets or long financial lectures. It starts by making money part of normal conversations.

Show them how decisions are made.

When you’re at the grocery store, explain why you compare prices. When they want something, talk about the difference between wanting it and being able to afford it. Give them opportunities to earn money, save it, spend it, and occasionally make mistakes with it.

Most importantly, teach them that money has a purpose.

  • Some is for today.
  • Some is for tomorrow.
  • Some is for helping others.
  • And some should be invested to create opportunities in the future.

You don’t need to teach your kids everything about money.

Teach them how to think about money.  That skill will serve them far longer than any allowance.

Financial confidence starts with financial conversations.

Start them early.

Give them clarity before life gives them consequences.

Keep navigating your financial future!
